DEKALB, Ill. – The Western Michigan fell in its first road meet of the season, 195.000-194.200 to Northern Illinois, Sunday afternoon. The Broncos featured the individual winner in the all-around and the bars.

“We improved on bars,” head coach Penny Jernigan said. “The team really focused on that this week and we really took a huge step forward. Unfortunately we under rotated on some of our vault routines and didn't get the job done at the end on vault. We need to get back in the gym and clean up our mistakes and get ready for Eastern Michigan on Friday.”

Western Michigan scored a 48.675 on the bars, their highest score in any of the four events on the day. Jessie Peszek scored a season-high 9.825 on the bars to win the event. It was her second win in the event this season after also winning the bars against Kent State.

“We had some bright spots today,” Jernigan said. “Jessie Peszek's bar routine was great and Jessica Juncai did the best bar routine I've ever seen her do. Audry Merritt's floor routine was phenomenal as well.”

Winning the all-around title for the fourth time this season was Anna Corbett who scored a 38.550. She scored a 9.625 or higher in three of four events including a fourth place finish on vault with a 9.775.

Other bright spots included Rachel Binkley setting a season-high on the balace beam and the floor exercise, with a 9.475 and 9.750 respectively. It marked the second straight week she has competed in three events. Jessi Buis had a season-high in the vault with a 9.800, placing second.

Freshman Rachael Underwood competed as an all-around gymnast for the first time this season. She competed in the lineup on the bars on Sunday after performing exhibition routines the last few weeks.

The Broncos will have two meets next week, competing on Friday, Feb. 19 in Ypsilanti, Mich., against Eastern Michigan before going to Mount Pleasant on Sunday to compete against the Chippewas.
