Deja Wimby, the Western Michigan women's basketball team extended its winning streak to nine games as the Broncos defeated Akron 73-60 at University Arena in the team's Mid-American Conference (MAC) opener.

The Broncos improved to 10-2 overall, 1-0 in the MAC and are now 5-1 at home this season, all while reaching the program's longest winning streak since the 1994-95 season. WMU is now chasing a 10-game winning streak, which hasn't been done since 1986-87 where the team won 11 straight. In the Broncos nine-game winning streak, eight of the wins have come by double-digits including each of the last six.
Hill, Mobley and Wimby combined for 63 of the teams 73 points, with Hill leading all scorers with 23 points, two away from setting a new career high. Mobley was an absolute force all game long, finishing with 21 points and 16 rebounds, 10 of which came on the offensive glass. Sixteen rebounds tied a season-high for Mobley and for any individual player on WMU. Wimby went for a career-high 19 points and was one rebound away from a double-double at nine. She also led the team in steals with four and tied for the team lead in assists with five.
The Broncos trailed just once in the game, where the Zips hit a 3-pointer to take a 17-14 lead with 2:50 to play in the first quarter. WMU ended the first quarter on a 6-0 run to lead 20-17 at the end of one. WMU pushed the lead to double-digits with 1:43 to play in the first half and the Zips were never able to bring it to single digits after that.
The Broncos outrebounded the Zips 45-30 including 20-7 on the offensive glass. Shooting percentages were about the same, as WMU finished at 39-7 percent and Akron at 38.2 percent. The Broncos doubled up the Zips in the paint, winning the battle 36-18.
WMU will now hit the road for two straight to open 2017, first traveling to Oxford, Ohio to face Miami on Wednesday, Jan. 4 at 7 p.m. and then heading to Muncie, Ind., to face Ball State on Saturday, Jan. 7 at 3:30 p.m. The team returns home to face Bowling Green on Wednesday, Jan. 11 at 7 p.m. in University Arena.
