KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The 13th ranked Western Michigan hockey team lost for the first time this season at home after falling to No. 17 St. Cloud State on Friday evening at Lawson Ice Arena.
Mikey Eyssimont gave the Huskies an early 1-0 lead just 48 seconds into the first period after poking it in from the side of the goal for his seventh goal of the season. That was the lone goal of the period as the Broncos (7-4-2, 3-4-0 NCHC) outshot SCSU 9-8.
Neither team scored in the second period, but Western Michigan kept up the pressure and rattled off 11 shots on goal. WMU had three of its five power plays in the second period, but freshman goalie Zach Driscoll kept them off the board.
Late in the third period Blake Winiecki punched one in from in front of the crease to push St. Cloud State's lead to 2-0. The Broncos pulled goalie Collin Olson with just under three minutes to play but SCSU's Robby Jackson converted the empty-netter to seal the game, 3-0.
WMU outshot the Huskies 26-25, while Olson made a season-high 22 saves in his second start.
The two teams go at it for the final time of the regular season on Saturday at 7 p.m. Tickets are available by calling 1-888-4-WMUTIX and online at wmubroncos.com.
