Broncos Down Miami 5-2 to Complete Weekend Sweep

KALAMAZOO, Mich.- After trailing 2-1, Western Michigan scored four unanswered goals en route to a 5-2 victory over the visiting Miami RedHawks Saturday. The Broncos also defeated Miami Friday night, 6-3.

The RedHawks took a 1-0 lead 4:24 into the game when Kiefer Sherwood got behind the Bronco defense and scored on the breakaway.

WMU sophomore Jade McMullen found the equalizer with five minutes left in the first period, finishing a nice feed from Michael Rebry with three seconds remaining on a power play. Miami responded seconds later with Gordie Green's back door goal to retake the lead, 2-1.

Trailing by a goal the Broncos got hot in the second period, scoring three goals and then adding a fourth in the third period. Western Michigan stepped up the pressure, out-shooting the RedHawks 16-7 in the middle frame. Freshman Lawton Courtnall evened the game at 8:04 with his second goal of the season.

Sophomore Matheson Iacopelli scored twice in the final 4:09 of the period to double WMU's goal total and give the Broncos a 4-2 lead. Iacopelli also put two goals away Friday night and now has a team-best nine goals through eight games this season.

Miami attempted to rally in the third period, taking 13 shots to the Broncos' five, but WMU goaltender Trevor Gorsuch rose to the challenge, stopping all 13 attempts. Western Michigan also managed to weather through five minor penalties in the period. Gorsuch made 29 saves in the game.

Bronco freshman Wade Allison tallied the final goal, scoring on the power play with just over three minutes remaining. Junior defenseman Scott Moldenhauer registered three assists on the evening while sophomore Griffen Molino had two.
