Broncos Fall Short at No. 1 Minnesota-Duluth, 2-0

DULUTH, Minn. – The Western Michigan hockey team fell short at No. 1 Minnesota-Duluth, 2-0, at AMSOIL Arena on Saturday night in National Collegiate Hockey Conference action.

The Bulldogs scored two power play goals, while Trevor Gorsuch made a career-high 33 save for the Broncos (6-3-1, 3-3-0-0 NCHC). UMD outshot WMU 35-30 on the night and Minnesota-Duluth was able to keep Western Michigan off the board on six power plays.

Alex Iafallo netted his second goal of the weekend at 14:44 to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. Carson Soucy knocked down a centering pass by Jared Thomas and the puck bounced right to Iafallo, who beat Gorsuch high on his glove side for his eighth goal of the season.

Minnesota-Duluth pushed the lead to 2-0 on another power play goal by Kyle Osterberg at 12:56 in the second period. Soucy also set this one up as he found Osterberg wide open in the right circle and Gorsuch couldn't get back to the right side of the net in time to make the saves.

Neither team scored in the third period. Gorsuch made 11 saves, including five on three power plays that included back-to-back five-on-three advantages for the Bulldogs.

Matheson Iacopelli had a game-high seven shots on goal, while Sheldon dries finished with five.

Western Michigan returns to Lawson Ice Arena on Friday and Saturday for Military Appreciation Weekend when it hosts Air Force at 7 p.m. on both nights. Friday's game can be seen live on the American Sports Network and on NCHC.tv. Saturday's game can be seen live on NCHC.tv.
