KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan volleyball team earned its first Mid-American Conference (MAC) victory of the season as the Broncos dominated Toledo in three straight sets Friday night at University Arena, the first sweep by WMU since Aug. 27 vs. Seton Hall.
The Broncos (6-12, 1-4 MAC) topped the Rockets (10-7, 3-2 MAC) 25-16 in the first set, using a 6-0 run to extend an early lead to 19-8 and eventually finishing the Rockets off. Senior middle blocker Nicole Kinser led the way in the first set with six kills on 11 attacks. Mikaela Ryshytylo added two serving aces as well.
In the second set WMU was relentless, winning the set 25-7 behind four Ryshytylo aces. The Broncos opened with a 6-0 lead and also finished the match on a 13-0 run, including three of Ryshytylo's aces in that run. Alysia Baznik, Kate Carey and Kinser all had kills in the middle of the Bronco run. Baznik, Carey and Sydney LeMay all led the team in the second set with three kills each.
In the third set, the Rockets kept it as close as they would all night as the Broncos came away with a 25-17 win to secure the victory in straight sets. Toledo stayed within striking distance in the beginning of the set, but WMU used an 8-1 run to extend the lead to 21-13. LeMay was dominant in the third set, leading the way with four kills, two solo blocks, one block assist and added two aces.
LeMay finished with a team-high 10 kills while Baznik added eight. Mary Murphy added a team-high 32 assists while Kathleen Reilly led with 16 digs. WMU finished with eight total blocks, as LeMay and Kinser each had two solo blocks. Ryshytylo tied six former Broncos for second in WMU history with six aces in a three-set match. As a team, WMU's hitting percentage was .310 while the Rockets finished at .000.
WMU is back in action with a home match against Ball State on Saturday, Oct. 8 starting at 3 p.m.
