Hockey Completes Comeback at Bowling Green

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- Colt Conrad and Wade Allison each tallied goals in the third period as the Western Michigan hockey team came back from a 4-2 deficit in the third period to earn a 4-4 tie at No. 20 Bowling Green on Friday night. Allison later netted a goal during the exhibition three-on-three overtime period.

Trailing midway through the third period Dawson DiPietro slid the puck to center ice while being taken down. Conrad skated through and picked up the puck for a breakaway and beat Flacon goalie Chris Nell for his first goal of the season. DiPietro picked up an assist for his first collegiate point. Sophomore goalie Trevor Gorsuch, who replaced starter Ben Blacker in the second period, also tallied an assist on the goal as WMU moved within one, 4-3.

DiPietro's actions on Conrad's goal drew a penalty that resulted in a power play for the Broncos. Corey Schueneman found Allison behind the net and he wrapped it around and in for his third goal of the season and second of the game, tying it at 4-4.

Neither team registered a shot on goal during the official overtime period.

The Broncos were up against early on after giving up two goals in the first 3:34 of the first period. Mitch McLain punched in a rebound on a shot by Kevin Dufour to give BGSU a 1-0 lead just 48 seconds into the game. That was followed up by short-handed goal by Sean Walker at 3:34.

WMU got on the board late in the first period when Allison posted up in the slot and got the puck from Cam Lee. The big freshman forward held off the BGSU defender and turned, firing it into the lower-left corner of the net for his second goal of the season. The assist was Lee's second on the season and Griffen Molino also tallied his second helper of the year as Western Michigan cut the lead to 2-1.

Bowling Green pushed the lead to 3-1 at 5:48 on a power play goal by Alex Rauhauser. Rauhauser beat Blacker from the right point and Gorsuch was put into the game after the goal.

The Broncos, once again, got within one on a goal by Sheldon Dries at 14:37 in the second period. Dries redirected a shot by Aidan Muir into the net to move the score line to 3-2. Muir tallied his team-best fourth assist of the season on the goal and Taylor Fleming also picked up an assist, his third of the year.

Bowling Green responded quickly, pushing the lead back to two at 4-2 with 3:33 left in the second period. The Falcons ended up with a two-on-one and Brent D'Andrea beat Gorsuch on his stick side.

Gorsuch went on to make 15 total saves in 39:03 of ice time in his first appearance of the season. The Bronco power play finished the night 3-for-12, while holding BGSU to just 1-for-12. '

The two teams face off again on Saturday night at Lawson Ice Arena. Puck drop is slated for 7:05 p.m. and can be watched live on NCHC.tv.
