 KALAMAZOO, Mich.- The Western Michigan women's tennis team opened the spring season with a pair of victories Saturday afternoon at West Hills Athletic Club. The Broncos topped Oakland 6-1 to start the day and then beat Valparaiso 7-0 later in the day.

WMU improved to 2-0 on the young season while both Oakland and Valpo drop to 0-1. First year head coach Ryan Tomlinson earned his first collegiete dual victory over the Golden Grizzlies.

"We played pretty well for our first matches of the season," Tomlinson said. "We came out and played great singles in both matches. I think each player that competed today did a great job. It's tough to play two matches in a day."

In singles play, sophomore Olivia Myers went 2-0 in No. 1 singles to improve her record to 4-3 this season. Freshman Melina Lyubomirova earned a pair of wins to move to 11-4 this season, the highest win total on the team. Junior Barbare Eristavi earned a 6-0, 6-0 win in the No. 3 singles spot to move to 5-5 this season. Freshman Katja Fevralev went 2-0 on the day to move to 10-1 this season. Freshman Denise Azcui moved her season record to 8-4 with a pair of wins in the No. 6 singles spot. Junior Meika Ashby earned a 6-4, 6-3 win in the No. 4 singles spot against Valpo. In doubles play, the duo of Tracy Kuhle/Lyubomirova went 2-0 on the day to improve to 6-2 this season.
