KENT, Ohio- The Western Michigan softball team dropped both games of Friday's doubleheader at Kent State, falling 3-0 and 2-0. The Golden Flashes (37-11,15-4 MAC) clinched the East Division title with the victories.
The Broncos had three hits in game one and six in game two. WMU had something going in the second in game one when sophomore third baseman
Kelsea Cichocki led off with a single and after a sac bunt,
Erin Binkowski singled to give WMU runners on the corners with one out. Kent State senior pitcher Emma Johnson shut down the threat with a pair of strikeouts. Johnson (20-5) recorded 12 strikeouts in the game, extending her scoreless innings streak to 37 while recording her MAC-leading 11th shutout of the season.
Junior
Allyson Kus (8-8) took the loss for Western Michigan, throwing a complete game as well. She allowed five hits and struck out five. Kent State scored in the bottom of the first and Dani Ramos made it a 2-0 game with a lead off home run in the fourth. Back-to-back two-out hits pushed the third run across for the Flashes in the sixth.
Solo home runs by Lauren Kesterson and Maddy Grimm in the third gave Kent State a 2-0 victory in game two. Western Michigan left eight runners on base including two runners on third.
Sophomore left fielder
Ivy Schaaf went 3-for-4 from the plate in game two. Cichocki hit her fifth double of the season in the second inning and singled in the sixth.
Freshman pitcher
Anissa Sanchez (4-5) went five innings and gave up five hits in the loss.
Western Michigan (20-23, 10-8 MAC) heads to Buffalo for the final two games of the regular season Saturday and Sunday. The 2015 MAC Tournament is May 6-10 in Akron, Ohio.
