KALAMAZOO, Mich.- Western Michigan totaled nine hits but couldn't hold off the hot bats of Central Michigan who collected 14, falling in game two of a three-game series against the Chippewas, 12-3. The Broncos will look to avoid their first sweep by CMU since 2010 in game three tomorrow at 1 p.m. WMU will recognize its eight seniors prior to the game.
Things looked promising for Western Michigan after taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first and two shutout innings by WMU starting left-handed pitcher
Keegan Akin. A pair of two run-home runs for Central Michigan changed the course of the game in the top of the third. CMU added a fifth run in the inning after a leadoff double and an RBI single.
Central Michigan continued to build on its 5-1 lead scoring in each of the next four innings, plating two runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings and one in the seventh. Western Michigan managed two runs in the bottom of the fourth, but that would be all the Broncos would push across.
Junior first baseman
Hunter Prince batted 2-for-3 for the Broncos. Senior right fielder
Jared Kujawa and freshman center fielder
Tanner Allison each had an RBI single. Sophomore shortstop Nick Voegelmeir also drove in a run on a fielder's choice. Junior designated hitter
Mitchell Ho recorded his first career triple and senior
Jordan Tillman cracked a pinch-hit double.
Five different Chippewas had multi-hit games. Ryan Heeke batted 3-for-4. Tyler Huntley and Nick Regnier each had a two-run blast in the third. Huntley led CMU with four RBIs.
Akin's day went just three innings, surrendering seven runs and eight hits despite striking out seven.
Josh Bays,
Pat Haynes,
Nick Bradley and
Matt Nestor all made relief appearances. Akin's record falls to 4-5 with the loss.
WMU (21-27, 13-13 MAC) locked in a spot in the MAC Tournament following a Miami loss to Ohio yesterday and will be fighting for tournament seeding tomorrow in the regular season finale. Central Michigan (34-20, 19-7) can clinch an outright conference championship with a win.
