SOUTH BEND, Ind.- The Western Michigan softball team suffered its first loss in seven games, snapping a six-game winning streak with a 10-2 defeat at Notre Dame on Wednesday.
The Broncos were limited to just four hits in the game, while the Fighting Irish managed 15.
Sophomore third baseman
Kelsea Cichocki hit a two-out, two-run double for the Broncos in the fourth. Senior catcher
Taylor Sanicki scored after being hit by a pitch, as did junior second baseman
Melissa Palmer who reached on a single to third.
Palmer had two hits in the game, also driving a base hit to left field in the sixth. Junior shortstop
Sabrina Gamboa collected her sixth double of the season in the fifth. Gamboa was named National Player of the Week by Louisville Slugger/NFCA Tuesday after batting a staggering .714 over six games last week, going 10-for-14 with four home runs, a double and 12 RBIs.
Rachel Nasland threw a complete game for Notre Dame to earn the win in the circle. She retired the first 10 batters she faced and struck out 10 in the game.
Sophomore
Erin Binkowski went 3.1 innings in the start for Western Michigan and allowed six runs and seven hits in the loss. Freshman
Anissa Sanchez also saw 1.2 innings of work and junior
Allyson Kus was brought in to record the final out.
Notre Dame (28-11) took a 4-0 lead in the first thanks in part to a three-run home run to center field by catcher Cassidy Whidden. The Irish added two runs in the fourth, a run in the fifth and three more in the sixth.
Western Michigan (12-17, 4-2 MAC) returns to Kalamazoo for its third straight weekend at home, hosting Northern Illinois for single contests next Saturday (2 p.m.) and Sunday (1 p.m.).
