KALAMAZOO, Mich.- Four different Broncos combined for seven home runs over two games Friday as Western Michigan swept Toledo in Mid-American Conference action by scores of 7-5 and 11-2.
Junior shortstop Sabrina Gamboa finished the day batting 5-for-5 with two home runs, a double, five RBIs and two walks. She delivered a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the seventh in game one to seal a come-from-behind 7-5 victory. WMU entered the inning trailing 5-2 and were down two runs when Gamboa stepped to the plate. In game two, she belted a solo home run in the fourth. Gamboa has homered in four straight games, also going deep in a pair games Wednesday at IPFW.
Sophomore pitcher Erin Binkowski had three hits, five RBIs, homered twice, and earned the win in the pitcher's circle in game two. She gave WMU a 2-0 lead with a two-run shot down the left line in game one and hit a walk-off two run blast in the sixth in game two as WMU reached the run rule difference. On the mound, she scattered three hits and struck out one to improve to 5-6 on the year.
Sophomore third baseman Kelsea Cichocki collected four hits, five RBIs and was the third Bronco to launch two home runs. She got the comeback started in game one with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the seventh. In game two, she scorched a three-run blast to straightaway center field in the first.
Senior center fielder Jenny Rohn joined the home run parade in game two, booming a grand slam in the second inning. She finished with three hits, including her team-leading 10th double of the season.
Western Michigan racked up 26 hits over the two games and held Toledo to just 11.
Freshman pitcher Anissa Sanchez picked up the win in game one, throwing 2.2 innings of relief. Junior Allyson Kus started the game and struck out four over 4.1 innings.
Western Michigan has won four games in a row and improved its overall record to 10-12, 2-2 in the MAC.Over the last four games, Western Michigan has outscored its opponents 51-10.
Toledo dropped to 12-18 and 0-4 in league competition.
The Broncos conclude the home weekend with single games against Bowling Green Saturday (2 p.m.) and Sunday (1 p.m.).
