Bronco Softball Swept by Central Michigan in Friday Doubleheader

KALAMAZOO, Mich.- Western Michigan softball dropped both games of Friday's doubleheader against Central Michigan, falling 9-1 and 4-3.

The Broncos return to Fran Ebert Field to host Eastern Michigan Saturday and Sunday in the final home game of the season. Saturday will be Alumni Day with a 1 p.m. first pitch and Sunday will be Senior Day with a 2 p.m. first pitch.

Katelyn Rentscler led Central Michigan's offense in game one, going 3-for-4 with two solo home runs. Chelsea DeLamielleure also went deep for the Chippewas, hitting a two-run homer to left in the fifth.

Central Michigan recorded 10 hits in the game while Western Michigan managed just five. The Bronco defense also committed two errors in the field, leading to three unearned runs for the Chippewas.

Senior catcher Taylor Sanicki drove in the only run for the Broncos with a sac fly in the third. Sanicki also had a single in the sixth.

Central Michigan's Rachael Knapp threw a complete game and struck out seven to improve her record to 13-7 on the season.

WMU junior Allyson Kus took the loss, throwing two innings before being pulled for sophomore Erin Binkowski in the third. Kus allowed five runs (two earned), four hits and walked three. Erin Binkowski worked the final five innings.

Western Michigan took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first in game two but couldn't hold off the Chippewas who had nine hits in the game. Sophomore left fielder Ivy Schaaf and Sanicki scored in the first after leading off the Bronco at bat with back-to-back singles.

Central Michigan put a run on the board in the top of the third on a double by Lacy Tolfree and an RBI single by Kristen Kuhlman. The Chips tacked on two more in the fourth to pull ahead 3-2. Binkowski skied a high fly ball to the fence in the bottom of the fourth that was misplayed by the left fielder allowing Binkowski to advance to third. She went on to score on a double by sophomore first baseman Marlee Wilson to tie the game at 3-3.

Western Michigan had a similar outfield error in the top of the fifth that allowed a CMU runner to make her way to third and score for the eventual winning run.

WMU had seven hits in the game, with senior center field Jenny Rohn collecting two. Rohn singled with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to put the tying run on base for the Broncos, but Western Michigan was unable to push her across.

Freshman Hanna Warren (6-8) started the game in the circle for Central Michigan and hurled five innings to earn the win. Knapp threw the final two innings to pick up her fourth save of the year. She allowed no runs, one hit and tallied four more strikeouts.

Binkowski again came on in relief for the Broncos in game two, entering in the fourth and was saddled with the loss. She surrendered one unearned run and three hits over 2.2 innings. Freshman Anissa Sanchez allowed three runs (two earned) over 3.1 innings in the start. Kus also made a relief appearance, recording the final three outs of the game.

DeLamielleure had two hits for Central Michigan in game two, giving her three for the day.

Western Michigan's record now stands at 18-21 on the season and 8-6 in the Mid-American Conference. With the two wins, CMU was able to pass WMU in the conference standings, moving into third with a 21-18 overall, 9-5 MAC record.
