AVON, Ohio- The Western Michigan baseball team dropped Tuesday's midweek meeting against Akron 7-4. The game was considered a non-conference matchup and was played at All Pro Freight Stadium in Avon, Ohio, home of the Mid-American Conference baseball tournament.
Western Michigan slipped to 14-22 overall with the loss and will look to get back on track tomorrow, hosting Michigan State at Robert J. Bobb Stadium at 3 p.m. The Broncos are also home this weekend, taking on Buffalo in a three-game MAC series.
Junior catcher Brett Sunde went 3-for-4 with an RBI against the Zips, while junior first baseman Hunter Prince had a pair of doubles, going 2-for-4. Sophomore shortstop Nick Vogelmeier drove in a run with a double and senior right fielder Jared Kujawa had an RBI single.
WMU got behind 3-0 after three innings, but clawed its way back to make it a 4-3 contest after the Bronco at bat in the seventh. Akron went on to score three runs in the bottom of the seventh however and WMU plated a final run in the top of the ninth.
Freshman right-handed pitcher Peyton Gray (1-3) took the loss on the mound, going 3.0 innings in the start. He allowed three hits, three runs, walked three and struck out two. Pat Haynes, Nick Bradley and Jake Bartels all saw relief work.
Freshman starter Josh Lapiana (1-3) picked up his first collegiate win for Akron after allowing one run over 5.0 innings pitched. The left-hander gave up six hits, walked three and struck out three.
