Western Michigan Baseball Suffers 8-6 Loss at Oakland

ROCHESTER, Mich.- Western Michigan baseball was edged on the road at Oakland Wednesday, 8-6. It was the Golden Grizzlies first home game of 2015.

Bronco freshman Tanner Allison hit his second home run of the season, booming a three-run shot to right field that helped fuel a four-run seventh and tie the game at 5-5.

The Golden Grizzlies regained the lead after a two-out Bronco fielding error led to three OU runs in the bottom of the seventh. WMU put a final run on the board in the top of the ninth before falling 8-6.

Junior RHP Pat Haynes started the game for Western Michigan and held Oakland scoreless and to just two hits over three innings. He struck out four and walked three but was lifted for freshman reliever Josh Bays on a pitch count in the bottom  of the fourth.

Western Michigan took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth and looked to make it 2-0, but had a runner thrown out at the plate. That Bronco advantage was short lived as Oakland plated five runs in the fifth. Ian Yetsko hit a grand slam for the Grizzlies off of senior RHP Will Nimke.

Western Michigan used four arms out of its bullpen as Derek Schneider and Nick Bradley also made appearances. Schneider suffered the loss giving up three unearned runs in 0.2 innings in relief.

Nate Schweers was the second reliever summoned by Oakland and earned his first collegiate win throwing 1.1 innings, allowing one run and striking out one. Chris Van Dyke collected his first career save tallying the final three outs without giving up a run. Colin Gee tossed six innings in the start for OU.

Western Michigan had five hits in the game while Oakland totaled 10. Allison went 2-for-2 after entering the game as a pinch hitter in the seventh and going on to play left field. Junior catcher Brett Sunde was 2-for-4 with a run scored and senior right fielder Jared Kujawa picked up WMU's other hit, as well as a walk, a stolen base and scored twice.

After breaking the previous school record (16) for hit by pitch in a single season yesterday against Valparaiso, sophomore Grant Miller was plunked for an 18th time this year Wednesday.

Oakland upped its record to 6-22 overall, while Western Michigan slipped to 13-19.

The Broncos take a 5-7 Mid-American Conference record into this weekend's three-game series at Bowling Green. First pitch Friday is 3 p.m., followed by 1 p.m. contests Saturday and Sunday.
