PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Junior LHP Derek Schneider recorded a career-high seven strikeouts over 6.1 innings as the Western Michigan baseball team defeated Georgetown, 4-1 on Monday afternoon at the Snowbird Classic.
Schneider had his longest outing of the season going 6.1 innings, allowing just two hits, giving up no earned runs and striking out a career-high seven in the victory. Schneider at one point went nine straight batters without giving up a hit. RHP Gabe Berman earned the save going the final 2.2 innings, allowing no runs on two hits. It was Berman's 16th save of his career, tying the WMU record for most saves in a career.
The Broncos (6-7) gained the advantage on the Hoyas right from the start scoring two runs in the top of the first. Sophomore Grant Miller would slap a double down the right field line, his fourth of the season to start the contest. One batter later, Junior Kurt Hoekstra on an error by the Georgetown (3-8) shortstop scored Miller from third and gave WMU the 1-0 lead. After a fly out, an error by the Hoya second basemen Chase Bushor scored Hoekstra, extending the Bronco lead to 2-0.
In the top of the fourth, freshman Tanner Allison provided the spark for the Bronco offense lacing an RBI triple down the left field line, scoring junior Hunter Prince from first who singled earlier in the inning. The Brown and Gold were at it again in the top of the seventh when junior Brett Sunde singled through the left side of the infield, bringing around Miller and extending the lead to 4-1 in favor of the Broncos.
The WMU bats came alive in the contest as five different players recorded hits. Sunde would be hot at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one RBI. Miller would go 1-for-3 along with scoring two runs. Going hitless, senior Jared Kujawa ended his 10-game hitting streak.
Tomorrow the Broncos will head down to Lakeland, Fla. to challenge the Detroit Tigers Prospects for the fourth straight season at Joker Marchant Stadium. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
