FORT MYERS, Fla. – Western Michigan falls 15-4 on Sunday, as Florida Gulf Coast completes a series sweep of the Broncos. WMU falls to 5-7 on the season and now heads to the Snowbird Classic.
The Eagles (8-8-1) sustained their hot bats from yesterday as they scored three runs in the second inning thanks to a two RBI single by left fielder Zach Spivey that gave FGCU the early 3-0 lead. WMU answered back in the top of the third when junior Kurt Hoekstra blasted a two RBI single, scoring sophomore Grant Miller and senior Jordan Tillman.
Trailing 3-2, the Eagles proceeded to score seven unanswered runs including a four run sixth inning. In the sixth, FGCU would rattle off four hits including back-to-back doubles by designated hitter Nick Rivera and right fielder Colton Bottomley to widen their lead to 10-2.
In the top of the seventh senior Jared Kujawa led off the inning with a single to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. After a strikeout, junior Drew Farmer singled to left center field giving the Broncos two base runners with one out. On the very next pitch, redshirt sophomore Tyler Frank laced his first triple of the season down the right field line and cut the FGCU lead to 10-4.
FGCU would tag on five more runs in the bottom of the eighth, loading the bases twice to secure the 15-4 victory. The Broncos were held to just two hits over the final two innings. In the loss, Hoekstra had a fine day at the plate going 2-for-3 with two RBI's. Frank with two RBI's, now has five on the year.
Nine different pitchers would be used for WMU with freshman LHP Tanner Allison taking the loss going 1.2 innings, giving up three runs on just two hits. As a staff, the Brown and Gold would strike out five batters. It was the most runs given up by the Broncos this season.
The Brown and Gold will continue their Florida trip by heading to Port Charlotte to take on Georgetown tomorrow at 5 p.m. as part of the Snowbird Classic.
