ATHENS, Ohio- Western Michigan baseball led 5-0 after three innings, but Ohio went on to score seven unanswered runs in a 7-5 WMU loss to the Bobcats Saturday. The Broncos won the opening game of the series Friday, setting up a rubber match in game three Sunday. First pitch from Bob Wren Stadium is at 1 p.m.
Western Michigan had 10 hits in the game and held Ohio to eight, but the Bronco defense committed four errors while Ohio had just one. WMU's record slipped to 9-13 on the season and 2-3 in the Mid-American Conference. Ohio is now 14-10 overall and 2-3 in the MAC.
Kurt Hoekstra,
Brett Sunde and
Drew Farmer each collected two hits and doubled in the contest.
Jared Kujawa also had a two-base knock. Sunde and
Hunter Prince drove in a pair of runs apiece and Hoekstra scored twice.
Junior RHP
Chad Mayle went 6.1 innings in a no decision before handing the ball off to freshman RHP
Josh Bays. Mayle allowed five runs (four earned) and seven hits. He struck out two and walked two. Bays (0-1) took the loss throwing an inning of relief.
Gabe Berman recorded the final two outs in the bottom of the eighth.
Western Michigan put three runs on the board in the first and scored two more in the third before Ohio slowly began to chip away. With one out in the first, WMU put two runners on when Nick Voegelmeier was hit by a pitch and Hoekstra drew a walk. Prince cleared the bags with a single to left. Sunde then hit a double that was misplayed in the outfield, allowing Prince to score from first.
Hoekstra led off the third with a single, followed by a double by Kujawa. Sunde scored both with a single to left to extend WMU's lead to 5-0.
The Broncos put two runners on in fifth and loaded the bases with one out in the sixth but were unable to push any more runs across. The Bobcat bullpen retired the final nine Bronco batters over the remaining three innings.
Ohio got its first run after a pair of singles and a sac fly in the fourth. The leadoff batter in the fifth was hit by a pitch and a WMU error allowed the runner to score unearned.
Western Michigan still held to a 5-2 lead through six complete innings. Ohio used a hit-by-pitch, a walk, an RBI single, an RBI double and a wild pitch to generate three runs in the bottom of the seventh, tying the game at 5-5. The Bobcats took the lead in the eighth scoring two on a two-out throwing error.
Jake Rudnicki threw four innings of scoreless relief for Ohio and Logan Cozart (2-0) stepped in to pick up the win, tossing two hitless frames.
