SOUTH BEND, Ind.- The Western Michigan baseball team fell in a midweek matchup at Notre Dame Wednesday, 8-3. The Broncos head to Athens, Ohio, for a three-game Mid-American Conference series against the Bobcats, March 27-29.
Western Michigan (8-12) and Notre Dame (16-7) each scored a run in the second and the Fighting Irish took the lead with a four runs in the bottom of the third. The Broncos scored again in the fourth but were held quiet over the four innings. The Fighting Irish extended their lead with three runs in the seventh and WMU scored a final run in the ninth.
Western Michigan had seven hits in the game. Sophomore Grant Miller (2-for-4), junior Hunter Prince (2-for-3) and junior Mitchell Ho (2-for-3) each had two hits apiece. Prince also drove in two runs, belting RBI doubles in the second and fourth innings.
The Broncos' third run was unearned in the ninth after Ho reached on a leadoff single. Notre Dame committed two errors in the inning.
In a scheduled staff day, Western Michigan used seven pitchers in the contest. Starting sophomore Keegan Akin tossed a scoreless first, not allowing a hit and walking one.
Freshman Tanner Allison was the first out of the bullpen and was charged with the loss, giving up four hits and four runs over an inning and a third.
Peyton Gray, Jacob Piechota, Pat Haynes, Gabe Berman and Nick Bradley also made relief appearances. Piechota held Notre Dame scoreless over 1.2 innings and Bradley did not allow a hit, throwing the bottom of the eighth.
