CLARKSVILLE, Tenn.- Western Michigan had a five-game winning streak come to an end Sunday, falling to Austin Peay in game three of a three-game series against the Governors, 6-1.
After four scoreless innings, Austin Peay got on the board with two runs in the fifth. Western Michigan shot back with a run in the top of the sixth, but that would be the Broncos' only tally of the day. With two outs, junior shortstop
Kurt Hoekstra doubled to right center and scored on
Brett Sunde's single through the left side.
Austin Peay added two more runs in the seventh and the eighth. The Governors totaled nine hits off three Bronco pitchers. Freshman
Tanner Allison (1-2) took the loss, giving up two runs (one earned) over 4.2 innings. He struck out seven and walked five.
Sophomore RHP Caleb Powell earned the win for Austin Peay, holding the Broncos to one run on six hits while striking out five in 7.0 innings. Alex Robles followed with two scoreless innings for the save.
Sunde had two of Western Michigan's six hits, going 2-for-4 from the plate.
Grant Miller, Hoekstra,
Evan Nelson and
Caleb Caton each had one.
The Broncos (5-4) begin a stretch of eight games in Florida this next weekend, heading to Fort Myers to play Florida Gulf Coast in a three-game series, March 6-8.
