CLEARWATER, Fla.- The Western Michigan softball team picked up its second extra-inning win on its spring trip to Florida, defeating Seton Hall in 10 innings Tuesday.
Western Michigan had a season-high 10 hits in the game.
The Broncos had three hits and scored two runs in the opening frame to take a 2-0 lead. Taylor Sanicki drew a one-out walk, followed by an RBI triple by senior outfielder Jenny Rohn. Sophomore third baseman Kelsea Cichocki drove in Rohn with a two-out single.
Freshman Alexis Walkden tied the game for the Pirates in the sixth, hitting a one-out, two-run home run.
After the hot start, Seton Hall didn't allow WMU another hit until the fifth. WMU collected two hits in the sixth and another in the seventh, but couldn't manage a run.
The game was decided using the international tiebreaking rules. Once the contest reached the eighth inning, each team started its at bat with a runner on second base. Rohn made her way to third for Western Michigan in the bottom of the eighth, but was thrown out at the plate as Seton Hall denied the game-winning run.
Seton Hall pulled ahead with a run in the top of the 10th, forcing WMU to score two runs in the bottom half of the inning to complete the victory.
Schaaf took second for Western Michigan and Sanicki laid down a sac bunt that was misplayed, resulting in her also reaching safely. Rohn delivered the game-tying hit with a double and with Sanicki at third, Melissa Palmer drove in the winning run with a sac fly.
Freshman Haley Thibeault started in the pitcher's circle for WMU and went 5.2 innings. Sophomore Erin Binkowski finished out the game and picked up the win, going 4.1 innings without allowing an earned run.
