Softball Closes Season with Loss at Akron

AKRON, Ohio - The Western Michigan fell to Akron, 10-2, in six innings to close out the 2014 season on Sunday afternoon at Lee R. Jackson Field.

The hometown Zips jumped ahead early on Sunday afternoon on a three-run home run with one out.  Western Michigan would answer in the top of the second when Marlee Wilson belted her second career home run to straight away center field to cut the Broncos deficit to a run, 3-2.  Wilson's two-run shot scored Jenny Rohn who led off the inning with a single up the middle.

Akron widened its lead from one to five runs, 7-2, courtesy of four runs on six hits in the home half of the second inning.

WMU went down in order in the third but Kelsea Cichocki, who hit .357 this week, led off the fourth inning with a base hit to center field.  The next batter grounded into a double play.  WMU's last base runner came in the fifth inning when starting pitcher Erin Binkowski drew a two-out walk but the freshman was stranded at first.

The Zips scored three more runs in the bottom of the sixth to end the game in six innings and end Western Michigan's season as the Broncos will not advance to the 2014 Mid-American Conference Tournament.
