KALAMAZOO, Mich. - WMU fell to Kent State, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon at Fran Ebert Field on Alumni Day.
Western Michigan and KSU each held the opposing offense in check for most of the afternoon with both teams combining for just eight hits. The game remained scoreless until the third inning when Kent State's Maddy Grimm hit her 13th home run of the season over the right field wall.
KSU's Abby Ledford scored an unearned run with two outs in the top of the fourth inning to put the Golden Flashes ahead, 2-0. The Golden Flashes tacked on a third and final run in the sixth.
WMU had its first base runner in the third when Caity Pixley drew a one-out walk. She was followed by Melissa Palmer earning a free pass two batters later but both runners were stranded. Lauren Nagy led off the fourth inning with a single to left field but the Broncos were not able to advance Taylor Sanicki, pinch running for Nagy, past first base.
Megan Stamm led off the fifth inning with a single up the middle and pinch runner Emma Bogart advanced to second on a Pixley sacrifice bunt. Bogart stayed at second base as the inning ended on a foul out by Palmer.
Western Michigan and Kent State will close out the series and the Broncos' home season Sunday at 1 p.m., on Senior Day. Christina Pigozzi and Alyssa Prokos will be honored prior to first pitch.
