MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - The Western Michigan softball team had its best weekend of the Mid-American Conference season thus far, going 3-1 this weekend, after falling to Central Michigan, 4-1, on Sunday.
The Broncos were held in check offensively on Sunday after scoring 16 runs over the first three games this weekend. Sabrina Gamboa collected WMU's lone hit on the day at Margo Jonker Stadium in the top of the first inning.
Western Michigan's lone run of the game, which tied it up after CMU took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, came in the top of the third. A pair of walks for Melissa Palmer and Ivy Schaaf led off the frame. Loren Nagy laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance both runners into scoring position and Kelsea Cichocki sent a sacrifice fly to center field to plate the game-tying tally.
The score remained deadlocked until the home half of the fifth when a double to left center gave CMU the lead for good. The Chippewas tacked on two more unearned runs in the last of the sixth to head to the seventh leading 4-1.
WMU put a runner aboard to lead off the seventh but a double play put an immediate damper on the comeback attempt as the game ended one batter later.
The Broncos will hold its second, and last, home weekend of the season on April 25-27 when Buffalo and Kent State are welcomed to Fran Ebert Field. Seniors Christina Pigozzi and Alyssa Prokos will be honored prior to Sunday's first pitch.
