CLEARWATER, Fla. - Western Michigan opened the 2014 USF Under Armour Showcase on Friday. Sabrina Gamboa and Kelsea Cichocki each hit a pair of doubles on Friday as the Broncos fell to Long Island, 5-0, and Saint Joseph's, 7-6.
In the nightcap Cichocki became the third Bronco to hit two doubles in a single game this season. Gamboa had a double in each of WMU's games on Friday.
Cichocki's first double of the day came in the opening inning as it plated a pair of runs, giving WMU a 2-0 lead. SJU tied the game at two runs apiece in the third. Western Michigan grabbed a 4-2 lead in the fourth but the Hawks took control with five runs in the home half of the frame to lead 7-4.
WMU plated a run in the fifth and another in the top of the seventh to pull within a run. Melissa Palmer singled to the shortstop to load the bases with two outs but all three were stranded as the game ended.
The Broncos collected six hits to LIU's seven in the 5-0 loss that opened play for WMU in Florida on Friday. LIU opened the game with three runs in the first and added one in each of the second and sixth innings.
