Softball Drops a Pair in Florida

TAMPA, Fla. - Western Michigan softball fell to Maine, 2-1, and South Florida, 7-0, during a split doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon.

Western Michigan played a pair of games on Tuesday in preparation for the upcoming USF Under Armour Showcase taking place this weekend.  The Broncos opened the day against Maine and a pitchers duel ensued.

Erin Binkowski allowed just five hits during her 6.0 innings of work but did allow two earned runs, which was eventually the difference.

Maine opened the scoring with a run in the top of the second inning.  The Black Bears opened the frame with a lead off single.  With two outs Maine doubled to right center field to bring the game's first run across home plate.

WMU wasted no time in evening the score, plating its run in the home half of the second.  Loren Nagy led off the inning with a single up the middle, one of three hits on the day for the sophomore.  Marlee Wilson mirrored Maine's scoring tactic with a double to score pinch runner Christina Pigozzi.

The score remained knotted at one run apiece until the top of the seventh when Maine another two-out RBI hit to break the tie.  WMU mounted a comeback attempt in the bottom of the seventh.  With one out Lesy Schalk pinch hit for Taylor Sanicki.  Schalk singled to center field and two batters later Melissa Palmer followed with a single to center as well.  With runners on first and second Mackenzie Ritsema grounded out to end the game.

In the afternoon game South Florida, which is receiving votes in national polls this week, opened the scoring with a run in the third and three more in each of the fourth and fifth frames to come away with a 7-0 win over the Broncos.

Nagy, Palmer, Ritsema and Jenny Rohn all registered hits in the loss for WMU.
