CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Western Michigan softball fell to host Illinois and Nebraska-Omaha, 13-1 in five innings and 5-3, respectively, on day one of the Fighting Illini Invitational.
WMU had the lead after the first inning in both games but was not able to make it hold up on Friday afternoon. In the opener Loren Nagy's single scored Jenny Rohn who led of the game with an infield hit. Illinois tied the score an inning later and then added four more runs in the third and posted eight in the fourth.
In the night cap, the Broncos posted a pair of unearned runs when Melissa Palmer and and Kelsea Cichocki each came home but UNO posted three runs in the third to take the lead.
In the top of the sixth Sabrina Gamboa sent home the tying run with two outs but Rohn was out at home when she tried to score to give the Broncos the lead. Omaha plated two runs in the last of the sixth on a home run to come away with the two-run victory.
Western Michigan will play North Dakota State and Saint Louis on Saturday to close out the invitational.
