Hockey Quotes: WMU vs. Miami 1/10/14

Head Coach Andy Murray

On the game overall…

“It was an intense fast game. They have a bunch of warriors on their team, but we play hard as well. It was man's game tonight because both teams played hard and solid.”

On WMU's resiliency…

“It was pretty dramatic tonight. We had just finished telling our guys two minutes before that we didn't want any more big hits the rest of the way and Josh got over-engaged. We thought that there could have been some more calls made but our guys battled hard. It is going to be the same kind of game tomorrow; a tooth-and-nail kind of battle. Can you imagine another 15 of these games? I just hope tomorrow night that this place is jam packed because both teams deserve that kind of support.”

On WMU's second period performance…

“I don't think it was as good as the first and the third it what I would say. I think we have to recognize that Miami is a pretty good team. After the first period we knew there was going to be a push back, and there were a couple of shots we should have blocked and scoring opportunities we should have capitalized on but I'll trade a poor second period for a win and three points any night of the week.”

On Balisy's performance…

“Chase just does everything right. We have a rule that for morning skates players are supposed to wear skate guards and I pulled Chase out this morning because he was the only one wearing them. He's our captain for a reason because he does everything right. I think there's a correlation between doing everything right and having success and getting rewarded. He got rewarded tonight.”

On putting in Slubowski…

“I think it's a situation now that can do because we have two capable goaltenders. When one is maybe not on his game then we're going to get the other guy in there. We believe in all of our goalies, I like Sam Bloomberg as a goaltender as well. It is a performance related sport and you have to get the job done and I felt that Lukas, who played just great for us in the GLI, was not as on as he needed to be.”

Sophomore Forward Nolan LaPorte

On playing in a back-and-forth game…

“It was awesome. The crowd was awesome tonight. We really felt all of the fans behind us, and when the game is going back and forth like that it really builds up the energy.”

On winning a conference game…

“It's huge for us seeing that we are tied with a couple teams. We got some big points tonight and we are happy to pick them up.”

On the team's confidence level…

“Coach has said it's a fresh start from Christmas on to the rest of the season and I think that our captains have really shown us the way.”

Senior Forward Chase Balisy

On the penalty kill…

“I guess it just happens. The first time Nolan got the puck and I saw he had some space so I took off and the second one we won a couple battles and took it to the net.”

On playing in a back-and-forth game…

“It was crazy. These are the best games to play in. A team like Miami plays you hard and tough, kind of like how we play.”

On playing with LaPorte…

“I think everyone feeds off of him, especially from the energy he brings in practice and games.”

On his performance…

“The first half of the season is done and you can't change what has already happened. All you can do is look forward to the second half and that is all I'm trying to do.”
