KENT, Ohio - The Broncos pitched a one-hitter in a 2-1 loss at Kent State, allowing two walks and that ultimately crossed home plate as the tying and go ahead runs.
Saturday's game was the definition of a pitchers duel as WMU starting pitcher Becca Shemberger and her KSU counterpart did not allow a hit until the sixth inning and it was the Broncos that struck first.
Up until the top of the sixth, the only base runner for WMU was Christina Pigozzi, who earned a one-out walk in the fourth. Mackenzie Shepeck changed that with the second pitch she faced in the sixth, taking the 1-0 offering over the fence for her first home run of the season, giving her team a 1-0 lead.
Kent State would answer almost immediately as the first two batters reached on walks and the third broke up Shemberger's bid for her first career no-hitter with a single to load the bases. A passed ball was WMU's undoing as two runs scored on the play.
Caity Pixley singled in the top of the seventh but was stranded as WMU recorded three hits and a walk offensively in the loss.
The Broncos play their final road game of the season tomorrow at 1 p.m. against Kent State.
