Hockey Quotes: WMU vs. MTU 12/28

Head Coach Andy Murray

On the game…

“I know a lot of teams get pictures taken before the tournament because it's that idea that you are not just here to participate you are here to try and win. We wanted to take our picture at the end of the tournament. Our guys played hard.”

On the winning play…

“To be honest with you I am not taking any credit for this but we talked a lot about shooting in to the end boards then our guy would be on the other side of them to get the puck. It was something we had talked about, besides just standing in front or having a shot blocked.”

On Hafner's performance…

“He was good. In hockey you need good goaltending and we've also got two other guys who can play as well.”

On what Detroit means to WMU…

“My only fear is that the last the Broncos won was 1986 and we didn't get invited back again until last year. I would hope we would get to return a little sooner. It's such a great tournament and venue.”

Junior Forward Justin Kovacs

On his goal…

“Their team is really good at blocking shots so we started throwing it off the end board. The bounced off really nicely and I popped it in. I didn't even see it go in. It's nice getting it for the tournament winner. I just saw one of our players celebrating and then I knew it went in.”

On the tone of the game…

“It was definitely an intense game. We came out and we knew what we had to do in overtime. It was a battle all game, and they played really well. It was up and down and back and forth but we are happy to have the win.”

On Hafner's performance…

“He's been playing outstanding. It's good that he finally got a shot and that he is taking advantage of it.”

On what winning the GLI means…

“It will be nice to bring this trophy back to our city and all of the fans that support us, they Blue Line Club and everyone else that is behind us. It's been a long time since we've won it so it feels good.”

Sophomore Goalie Lukas Hafner

On the shutout…

“I don't know how you could put it in to words. The boys made my job pretty easy for me. They blocked a lot of shots for me.”

On Kovacs' goal…

“I actually didn't see it go in. So it was a little bit of a scrum trying to figure out what happened but once I saw the red light go on I don't think I've ever skated that fast in my life. It was pretty exciting.”

On the tone of the game…

“I think there was a huge momentum change when we killed off that penalty at the end. They had their chance and as a group we decided to take our opportunity and win it.”

On his confidence level…

“It's pretty good right now. The team is playing really well. It makes my job a lot easier. I've been playing since I was 5 years old so I just try to not get too nervous out there and go out and have fun.”
