EAST LANSING, Mich. -- In his second career start Lukas Hafner made 22 saves for his first career shutout, earning Western Michigan a 2-0 win over Michigan State in front of 6,175 fans at Munn Ice Arena on Friday night.

WMU picked up goals from Nolan LaPorte and Justin Kovacs on the night. The Broncos were outshot 22-21 but held the Spartans scoreless on three power plays.

The Broncos first goal of the night was scored by LaPorte from Colton Hargrove and Josh Pitt at 13:08 in the second period. Hargrove passed the puck to Pitt which created a two-on-one opportunity. Pitt dished the puck from the faceoff dot to LaPorte in the slot who chipped it in glove side. The goal marked LaPorte's fourth goal of the season, while Pitt picked up his fourth assist of the season and Hargrove notched his fifth helper.

Just after returning to even strength in the third period the Broncos scored their second goal of the game with a two-on-one opportunity. Shane Berschbach passed the puck up to Chase Balisy at the point who drew the goalie out. Balisy fed it to Kovacs who scored down low with a wide open net. The goal was Kovacs' fourth of the season, after coming into his junior year with just four career goals. Balisy tallied his eighth assist on the season and Berschbach picked up his team-leading ninth.

The Broncos will take on their former CCHA rivals the Spartans again tomorrow night at 7 p.m. at Lawson Ice Arena.
