Broncos WIN, 31-30

Box Score

FOXBORO, Mass. -- Redshirt freshman quarterback Zach Terrell threw for 275 yards and four touchdowns as Western Michigan defeated Massachusetts, 31-30, for the team and head coach P.J. Fleck's first career win, at Gillette Stadium on Saturday night.

With time winding down in the fourth quarter and the score deadlocked at 24-24 WMU faced a third-and-11 from the Bronco 46 yard-line. Terrell found Corey Davis on a slant route at the UMass 45 yard-line and the freshmen wide receiver took it to the house for the game-winning score.

UMass responded with a 13-play 68-yard drive to almost close the game at 31-30 after a two-yard touchdown run by Lorenzo Woodley. The Minutemen elected to try for two to win the game but the coverage by the Western Michigan defense forced a high throw into the back of the end zone to seal the win.

Terrell had career-highs in every passing category, completing 23-of-36 attempts with a long of 54 yards. Davis also had career highs with 10 receptions for 154 yards and two touchdowns. Brian Fields finished the night with a game-high 65 yards on 18 carries. Justin Currie led the Bronco defense with 13 tackles, while Mike Jones finished with 11 and 1.5 for loss. Ronald Zamort had two tackles on the night with two pass breakups, pushing his season-total to 15 for third-all time in program history for breakups in a single season.

Western Michigan out-gained Massachusetts 393-332 on the day. The defense clamped down on Bailey's favorite target Rob Blanchflower in the second half. After catching four balls for 102 yards in the first half he only caught three passes for 32 yards the rest of the night.

After Kahry Bailey-Smith took the opening kickoff 90 yards to give UMass a 7-0 lead, the Broncos responded with their longest drive of the season at 18-play 57-yard drive that was capped off by a Andrew Haldeman 36-yard field goal with 6:06. The 18 plays tied for the second-longest in program history and the 8:44 made it the longest drive of the season in terms of time of possession. WMU converted three fourth downs to keep the drive going.

Jamal Wilson pushed UMass' lead to 14-3 on a three-yard touchdown run to complete a seven-play 61-yard drive with 13:05 remaining in the second quarter.

Western Michigan responded on the next drive after Terrell found Antoin Scriven out in the flat and the fullback took it 31 yards to the house for the longest touchdown reception of his career.

A 55-yard completion to Minutemen tight end Blanchflower took the ball down to the WMU one-yard line. UMass quarterback A.J. Doyle reconnected with Blanchflower from six yards out to give the Minutemen a 21-10 lead.

Terrell led the Broncos 62 yards down the field for his second touchdown pass of the game after finding  Kendrick Roberts in the end zone from five-yards out. Terrell was four-for-four on the drive for 35 yards, his first of two perfect drives on the day to cut the lead to 21-17 going into halftime.

He opened the second half going three-for-three for 45 yards and hit Davis for a 14-yard touchdown to give WMU its first lead of the game, 24-21, with 11:59 left in the third quarter. Davis had two catches for 36 yards on the drive.

UMass's Blake Lucas connected on a 37-yard field goal with 6:36 left in the third quarter to tie the game 24-24.

Western Michigan heads into a bye week before heading to Eastern Michigan on Saturday Nov. 9 at 1 p.m.
