Five Broncos Score as WMU Wins Big Over UAA

FAIRBANKS, Alaska -- Five different Broncos found the net as the Western Michigan hockey team opened up the 2013 Brice Alaska Goal Rush with a 6-2 win over Alaska-Anchorage at the Carlson Center on Friday night.

Shane Berschbach tallied two goals and notched an assist for the third three-point night of his career to lead the Broncos. Sheldon Dries, Josh Pitt, Nolan LaPorte and Dennis Brown also netted goals, while Chase Balisy, Jordan Oesterle and Justin Kovacs tallied two assists each in the win. Frank Slubowski made 24 saves to earn his first win of the season and helped the Broncos kill off six of UAA's seven power plays on the night.

While the Broncos did a good job of holding Anchorage's special teams at bay, they were able to convert on two of their nine power plays on the night.

WMU struck first on the power play when Sam Mellor fired a shot from the right point and Pitt tipped it between UAA goalie Rob Gunderson's legs for his first goal of the season and the team's first goal of the season at 15:48 in the first period.

Anchorage responded with 54 seconds left in the period with a power play goal. A loose puck bounced to Matt Bailey and the senior captain fired a shot into the top-right corner of the net for his second goal of the season.

WMU responded with a four-on-four goal with 0.4 seconds remaining in the period when Oesterle fired a shot from the top of the right circle and Dries came out of nowhere to back-hand the rebound into the net for his first collegiate goal to give WMU a 2-1 lead heading into the second period.

LaPorte pushed the lead to 3-1 just 2:50 into the second period after Balisy fired a shot that went wide and bounced off the boards to the side of the net. LaPorte jammed at the puck and poked it in for the short-handed goal and his first of the season.

Just 50 seconds later Kovacs picked off a pass at the Anchorage blue line and dished it to Berschbach in the right circle. The senior forward skated in and tossed a back-hander over Gunderson's should and under the cross bar for his first goal of the season. WMU held strong despite taking four penalties in the period, killing off four power plays, and went into the locker room with a 4-1 lead.

Berschbach struck again just 2:05 into the third period after forcing the goalie to the ground and tucking the puck around him and into the net to give WMU a 5-1 lead.

Brown added his first of the season minutes later on the power play. Balisy won a power play back to Colton Hargrove, who dished it to Brown and the senior defenseman fired the puck into the back of the net from the deep slot to push the lead to 6-1.

Bailey added his second of the night for UAA at 14:19 in the third period to put the final score at 6-2.

Western Michigan plays hosts Alaska-Fairbanks late Saturday night at 11:05 p.m.
