Women's Basketball Falls to Miami

KALAMAZOO, Mich.- Western Michigan's offensive struggles continued in a 73-47 loss to MAC East preseason favorite Miami Sunday at University Arena. Junior guard Corie Buchanan was the lone Bronco to reach double digits, scoring 10 points. She also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

"You have to tip your hat to Miami," said WMU head coach Shane Clipfell. "They are a solid team with a lot of balance. They have veterans, they have inside, they have outside, and they rebound the ball well. They are just a good team.

"When we cannot score and teams can play poorly and still build a 10-point lead, you are just going to open the floodgates for them. I am blaming a lot of our defense on our offense."

WMU shot 19-for-59 (33.3 %) from the floor and uncharacteristically missed seven of its 14 free throw attempts. The Broncos had entered the game as one of the top free throw shooting teams in the conference.

Western Michigan (4-11, 0-2 MAC) battled the RedHawks closely early on, even leading 20-17 with 7:05 remaining in the first half. Miami enjoyed a 30-24 lead at the break and outscored WMU by 20 in the second half.

Miami (9-6, 1-1 MAC) was paced by senior guard Courtney Osborn, who dropped in six of her team's 12 three-pointers. Osborn finished with a game-high 22 points and six assists. Haley Robertson hit four three-pointers and had 19 points for the RedHawks, while Hannah Robertson had 12 points. Miami shot 45.8 percent from the floor of 60 percent from behind the arc.

Sophomore Marquisha Harris totaled nine points for WMU, as did senior guard Aurielle Anderson, who also had four assists. Freshman Miracle Woods recorded eight points and six rebounds. The RedHawks outrebounded the Broncos, 42-33.

Western Michigan will look to get back on track Wednesday, when it travels to West rival Central Michigan (8-7, 1-1 MAC). Tip off in Mount Pleasant is at 7 p.m.
