KALAMAZOO, Mich.- Albany opened up a tight game in the second half, defeating Western Michigan, 68-54, Sunday at University Arena.
Junior guard Corie Buchanan led WMU with 10 points and sophomore Julia Henson hit three 3-pointers for nine points. Ten different Broncos scored in the game
Western Michigan led by as many as nine, 22-13, with 10:13 left in the first half. Albany closed out the period with a 14-5 run however to tie the score at halftime, 27-27.
Albany kept its foot on the gas in the second half, outscoring WMU 41-27. The Great Danes built a double-digit lead within the first six minutes.
Bronco sophomore Jazmine Windham scored all eight of her points in the second half and helped WMU pull within seven on a three-pointer with 8:27 remaining. Albany again stretched its lead to double digits and WMU wouldn't get any closer.
The bigger-sized Great Danes outrebounded the Broncos, 38-29, and controlled the points in the paint, 32-16.
Western Michigan was able to improve on its turnover number, committing its lowest in three games with 14.
Albany won the America East last year and qualified for the NCAA Tournament. The Great Danes are off to a 2-1 start this season. The loss drops WMU to 1-2.
The Broncos travel to Flagstaff, Ariz., later this week to take part in a Thanksgiving Tournament at Northern Arizona. WMU takes on the host Lumberjacks Friday at 4:05 ET and will play either Bradley or Tulane Saturday.
