WMU vs. EMU Post-Game Quotes

Head Coach Bill Cubit

Opening Statement:

"That's just how the season, it just wasn't enough in the end. It didn't work out, and sometimes in life that happens. It just felt like the same thing at the end we came up short. I told the kids not to hang their heads, and to keep their heads up. It's a tough year and it was a tough loss."

On having enough talent to compete for a MAC title:

"I always do. I think anybody in this league does. There are certain things that you need to take advantage of and we didn't. I think every year you have a chance, because if you don't then why would you even go out and play the games?"

On leads/ties turning into losses:

"That's just kind of how this season went. You hate losing because you put so much time and effort into it, and when you don't win you just feel bad about it. I don't feel bad for myself, I feel bad for those kids in there. I want them to feel good, and unfortunately they don't have much to feel good about right now. If you go down all of our loses almost every one of them could have been a win."

On three year loss streak for Michigan MAC Trophy:

"This year has been a long year. No bye weeks, our non-conference games, losing a quarterback, losing wide outs, and a bunch of other guys. Everyone goes through this. This was sixteen straight weeks of football. I'm not making excuses, but it's long. There were no breaks except for the mandatory Sundays off. No excuses. It just didn't work out. I think every coach in America goes through this if you're in the game long enough, that's just the way it is."

On Alex Carder's impact on the program:

"I think he is one of the better leaders we have ever had. I think he is one of the toughest leaders we have ever had. The guy loves to compete. He is smart, and a great player and an even better kid. You'll see him battling all the way to the end."

Senior quarterback Alex Carder

On tonight as his career wrap up:

"I have mixed emotions. I'm obviously disappointed in the outcome of the game. It's not the last taste I want left in my mouth of Waldo. I'll never forget the bonds I built here, or the relationships with the coaches. They were always concerned about getting us better and putting us in the best possible position to do so, as a team and individually. I'd like to say I don't have any regrets, but you regret losing your last game. Sharing the field of battle with guys is what I'm going to miss. You don't have that kind of comradery after college. I'm sad that a lot of guys won't have that opportunity to put the pads on again. I'm sad. I obviously don't feel good right now. My thoughts are with the seniors and hopefully we can try to find the positives in this."

Sophomore SS Justin Currie

On the defensive effort today:

"I thought we had a good game plan going in. We had a lot of missed tackles and I think that was the biggest thing. It was pretty planned out for the quarterbacks and their change up."

Junior Running back Dareyon Chance

On his running game this season:

"It all starts from the guys being coached, and they just went out and did their part. That made it possible for me to make some plays. We didn't do anything fancy, we just executed and we had a good result from it."

Head Coach Ron English

Coach, great victory, you get to hold unto the MAC Trophy, just tell us how that feels?

  • I'm just happy because these guys really stayed together and played for each other today and we have been getting better but just having spurts where we didn't play well and I thought that the guys tried their best to do what they were supposed to do for those four quarters today

Talk about controlling time with possession?

  • I thought we moved the sticks and when we needed too, we got first downs and I thought we ran the ball pretty well and we also threw it well but we did enough to move the sticks and maintain possession of the football today

Talk about your two QB system today?

  • It was good to have both quarter backs in at the same time, when Alex can play receiver and Tyler can play QB. Then we ran Tyler on some of the Q runs too, so I thought that really helped us. I thought as a team we did well, the defense gave up 17 points, the offense scored 29 and then the special teams played well, we had some nice returns in the kick return game and I thought our kick coverage unit covered pretty well and then when we punted it was fair catches, so it was a good job.

Last comments from Head Coach:

  • What a tremendous kick, first off by the Western kicker. That was an unbelievable kick, for our guys to keep fighting. We all have such high expectations because of where we've come from and where we believe we are going. The season has not gone the way we wanted, but the players have continued to get better and that just shows what kind of guys we have on the team.
