KALAMAZOO, Mich.- Western Michigan had a balanced attack and led start to finish, defeating Ball State 68-51 Saturday in the Broncos' final regular season home game. The senior foursome of
Brenna Banktson,
Ebony Cleary,
Kemmy Dominique and
Taylor Manley combined for 41 of the team's points.
Western Michigan knocked down five of its first seven shots, including three three-pointers to jump out to a 13-5 lead. WMU's hot start prompted a timeout by Ball State, but it wouldn't slow the Broncos down. Western Michigan shot 50 percent from the field in the first half and 41.8 percent for the game. The Broncos rolled onto a 43-26 halftime advantage. Both teams scored 25 points in the second half.
Nine of the 10 Broncos that played scored in the game, six scoring seven points or better. Manley led WMU with 16 points, followed by nine points from Cleary and
Aurielle Anderson. Banktson and Dominique each had eight and
DeAirra Goss finished with seven. The Broncos scored 21 points off of 24 forced turnovers and outscored Ball State on the fast break 12-2.
Emily Maggert scored a game-high 18 points for Ball State (9-19, 4-11 MAC) and Ty'ronda Benning had 11. Western Michigan held Ball State to just 34 percent shooting on the day. It was the first win for WMU over BSU since Feb. 17, 2007.
The victory was the Broncos' second in a row and fourth straight at home, improving to 9-19 overall, 5-10 in the Mid-American Conference. It also still keeps WMU in contention to host a first round MAC Tournament game. Western Michigan concludes the regular season on the road at Eastern Michigan next Wednesday, March 2.
