CLEARWATER, Fla. - Western Michigan softball is still looking for its first win of the season after falling to Temple, 5-3, at the University of South Florida Invitational on Friday morning. WMU matched the Owls with five hits and Meredith Whitney had a two-RBI day but a four-run fourth inning gave Temple enough for the come-from-behind victory.
Gracie Barstad (2-for-3) was the offense for WMU in the top of the first as the Broncos struck first. The junior led off with a single up the middle and advanced to second on Courtney Rousseau's sac bunt. Barstad reached third on a wild pitch and then scored on an illegal pitch.
Both teams went scoreless in the second and third innings but Western Michigan added to its lead in the fourth. Courtney Burnett, pinch running for Tara Buchanan, scored when Meredith Whitney reach on an error in the infield. It was one of two RBIs for Whitney against Temple.
Whitney's second RBI came after Temple took the lead, 4-2, and had since added an additional run to lead 5-3. In the top of the sixth Whitney singled to center field, scoring Lexi Jager from third base. Jager led off the inning with a double and later stole third to set up the Broncos' third and final run of the game.
Western Michigan has little time to rest as the Broncos hav two games scheduled back-to-back on Saturday. WMU will play Central Connecticut State at 8:30 a.m., and then take on the fifth ranked team in the country, facing Alabama at 10:30 a.m.
