ATHENS, Ohio - Western Michigan softball dropped a doubleheader to Ohio on Friday afternoon, falling 5-2 in the opener and 4-0 in game two at the Ohio Softball Field. Lexi Jager and Gracie Barstad each registered multi-hit games during the two losses on Friday afternoon, each going 2-for-3 at the plate.
The Broncos opened the early game by scoring in the opening inning. Jager registered a base hit and later scored on Barstad's single. Ohio answered with two runs of its own in the bottom of the opening frame to take a lead it would not relinquish. The Bobcats added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a commanding 5-1 lead. WMU added a second run in the top of the seventh but the Broncos could not draw closer.
Ohio scored all the runs it needed in the bottom of the first, plating three runs on four hits. The Bobcats nearly hit for the team cycle in the inning, recording a single, two doubles and a triple. Lauren Gellerman registered a pinch hit home run in the bottom of the sixth to tack on the game's final run.
Diana Patterson was chased from the game after allowing three earned runs in the first inning. Kayla Houston worked the final five defensive innings, allowing just the one run on four hits and striking out seven batters. Barstad went for 2-for-3 in the second game with a pair of singles in the first and fourth innings, respectively. Also recording hits for the Broncos in the second game were Michelle Bendewald, Meredith Whitney and Jenn Tschetter, all with singles.
Western Michigan travels north to Akron to take on the Zips on Saturday and Sunday. Akron was swept by Northern Illinois in a doubleheader on Friday, losing the opener, 7-3, and falling in the nightcap, 7-6.
