Three Broncos Go Deep in 4-1 Win at Toledo

WMU vs. Toledo Game Stats

TOLEDO, Ohio - After hitting only one home run since March 18, Western Michigan broke out with three home run blasts in the Broncos' 4-1 win at Toledo.  Meghan Thomas, Michelle Bendewald and Courtney Rousseau all went yard in a win that gave WMU its first Mid-American Conference series sweep this season.

Thomas, who also homered in the Broncos' win at Akron last weekend, got the long ball onslaught started early with a two-run blast to left field, scoring Gracie Barstad who had registered a two-out walk.  Toledo cut the Broncos' lead in half in the bottom of the fourth after a wild pitch advanced a runner to third base and a single brought that run home.

All four of Western Michigan's runs crossed home plate thanks to a home run.  The next one came in the top of the sixth.  Again facing two outs, Bendewald stepped to the plate and poked her second home run of the season over the left field wall to give WMU a 3-1 lead.

Rousseau, also hitting her second home run of the year, was not able to hit a two-out home run like her teammates.  She led off the top of the seventh with a home run, but like her teammates her home run was sent over the left field wall.

Three of WMU's six hits were home runs with Sarah Thomas, Meredith Whitney and Diana Patterson each adding base hits to the team total.

Whitney did her damage in the circle, earning her seventh win of the season and evening her pitching record at 7-7.  She struck out five batters on Sunday to bring her weekend total to 22 Ks.  Whitney allowed just three hits in the series finale but more importantly she picked up her third win in three starts this weekend, accounting for all of WMU's wins against Bowling Green and Toledo.

The Broncos play MAC travel partner Northern Illinois this weekend in DeKalb, Ill.  Saturday's game gets under way at 3 p.m. ET and Sunday's first pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET.
