Game Stats vs. Virginia Tech
CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Broncos closed out the 2009 Under Armour Invitational hosted by
South Florida with a hard-fought one-run loss to Virginia Tech, 1-0 on
Sunday morning to close our their early season tournament schedule.
Western Michigan's Meredith Whitney, who was everywhere for the Broncos this week was working on a three-hit possible shut out entering the bottom of the seventh in a scoreless battle against the Hokies. With one out in the inning, Marra Hvozdovic hit a walk-off home run to end the game and the tournament for WMU.
The Broncos had three hits on the day but had the opportunity to bring home runs as WMU stranded nine runners on the base paths thanks in part to five walks given up by VT's Kenzie Roark and two errors by the Hokies defense.
Collecting hits for WMU were Whitney, who hit .450 and slugged .650 with two doubles, a triple and three RBIs this past week, Gracie Barstad and Amanda McBride. The Broncos had their best scoring opportunity in the fifth inning when they had a pair of runners at second and third base but could not get the go ahead run across home plate.
During the past week Lexi Jager hit the seventh home run of her career and she also now has eight stolen bases on the season.
WMU fell to 6-9 on the season and will now have 16 days before they travel to Michigan State on March 24. It will be one of two non-conference games before opening Mid-American Conference play, taking on Notre Dame on March 25.
