TEMPE, Ariz. - The Western Michigan softball team
dropped two contests Friday to open the 2009 Kajikawa in Tempe, Ariz., the
first being a tough 4-2 loss to Penn State early in the day and the second was a 10-1
defeat to Oklahoma
State.
Sophomore Lexi Jager led the Broncos on the day with four
total hits, including a 3-for-3 performance against PSU, and scored a run in
each contest. Freshmen Meredith Whitney and Gracie Barstad each added a pair of
hits on the first day of the tournament and Whitney crossed home plated for the
Broncos' second run of the game against PSU.
Slow starts by the Broncos and a quick flurry of offense by
their opponents attributed to the opening day defeats. Penn
State jumped out to an
early 4-0 lead, with all four runs coming in the second inning. The Broncos responded by scoring runs in the
third and fourth inning, but were unable to get on the scoreboard in the final
three innings. Whitney (0-1) got the
loss after a six inning performance where she struck out four, allowed three
earned runs, and eight hits.
In the second game of the day, the Broncos responded to a
two-run inning by the OSU Cowgirls after Whitney singled up the middle and
knocked in Jager to cut the lead to 2-1.
However, the Cowgirls scored eight unanswered runs to seal the victory
in the opening day finale. Junior Kellie
Zache (0-1) was given the loss after giving up seven runs in two and two-thirds
innings.
The Broncos will look to gain their first win of the season
on Saturday when they face Wagner and Central Florida
on the second day of the tournament.
