MUNCIE, Ind.- The Broncos were bettered in three of four events, as the Western Michigan gymnastics team fell to league foe Ball State on the road Sunday, 190.975 to 189.800.
Andrea Perini and Erin Doucey led Western Michigan on the balance beam, where the Brown & Gold outscored the Cardinals, 47.200 to 46.050. The two tied for first place in the event, recording scores of 9.725. Liz Prouty took third with a 9.500.
Prouty had the Broncos' top score on the vault, a 9.625, placing fourth and also took fourth on the floor with a 9.625. The team scored a 47.700 on the vault, its highest event total of the day, but Ball State went 48.275. The Cardinals scored 48.000 or higher in all the events except the beam.
Kristine Garbarino paced WMU on the bars with a 9.700, taking fourth and also had the Broncos' top score on the floor, tallying a 9.675 to place third.
Perini led Western Michigan's three all-arounders totaling a 38.525, but was edged out by BSU's Teresa Phipps with a 38.675.
The Cardinals improved to 2-6 overall and 1-5 in the MAC, while the Broncos fell to 1-11 overall and 0-5 against league competition.
Western Michigan travels to Missouri for the Cat Classic next week, where the Broncos will face off with Michigan State, Cal State Fullerton and host Mizzou.
