Gymnastics Picks Up First Win at UIC

CHICAGO- The Western Michigan gymnastics team edged out the University of Illinois-Chicago on the road for their first win of the season, 191.875 to 191.575. Andrea Perini tied for first in the all-around and Cepeda Carter and Kristine Garbarino also had first place finishes.

The Broncos overall score was their highest of the year. They also set new team highs on the beam (47.950) and floor (48.200).

"We really had people step up and put forth some big performances today," WMU head coach Terry Karwoski said. "We came together as a team and our freshmen really came through for us."

Carter, a freshman walk-on, had her best showing hitting career highs on the bars (9.625), beam (9.750) and floor (9.600), finishing fourth in the all-around (38.425). She and Perini tied for first place on the beam.

Perini, who was sidelined last Saturday after an injury on her vault landing, recovered this week and came back to capture the all-around crown with a season-high 38.650.

Sophomore Kristine Garbarino recorded her first ever top finish on the floor, posting a 9.775. She also had a pair of fourth place finishes on the vault (9.700) and beam (9.550).

Western Michigan (1-5) is back in action Friday, Feb. 6 at the State of Michigan Classic, where the Broncos will go head-to-head with Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Michigan and Michigan State in Ann Arbor at 7:30 p.m.
