WMU at Temple Post-Game Quotes

Western Michigan Head Coach Bill Cubit

On win...
“It was a pretty good thing to me. I don't know about anyone else. And I appreciate having this game at Temple, so I could have my family reunion back there, that's great.

And it's a great win, I mean it really is. I mean, you know the thing is when you go in there sometimes, you get a 45-44, and everybody gets all fired up, and you know, God, you win a great game, but a 7-3 game is pretty good too. So you know, we went out there and we played hard on defense and offense we were pretty good but that's not a bad thing. I sure as heck would rather be going on that 4-1 than playing real good and being 3-2. I'm happy, is anybody else happy?

The field position was the key in the first half. I think the turn over by one, and they had trouble scoring but they were moving down because you've got the punt. And so that happened the whole first half and then we didn't do anything until nearly the end there and we missed a field goal. And then the second half we gave them good position with the kick off return and then we fumbled it. So that now put you right back in the same boat that you were in the first half. So the field position to me was the big big key because they were not going to let you get up and drive on those lines.

At 80 or 90 yards, I mean, it's hard. They're too good. That's a good football team defensively. And then you know the punting rose, we had a few of those, but you know, we came up with some big plays, came up with some good 3rd down stops. And fortunately they missed a field goal down there at the end.

You know we got one, we made one good drive, and Juan makes a great play and Tim throw a great ball and so you know, so that's our change. They have the number one kickoff return, you know they present a lot of problems. You don't want to kick it off down to that guy, because he may go to the house. So now you know, you're giving up field position, gets them up to the 30 the 35, and if you get one good first down, you're down to about the 45 and they punt it, now you're already down to the 20, and it's hard going 80 yards. Simple math. You know, they took two (returns) back on Penn State and you don't want to do that, in that type of game you don't want them to have that type of chance to take it back. And so, with the kids, that was great by Mike. He did nice job, and they need to go 70, and again it's going to be hard to go 70 and with a young quarterback.

Well yeah their defensive line was really good. Their defense will always b"e really good...They've got really good big strong kids and they're doing a nice job defensively. And their doing a great job with the coach. I've coached with him, he's a great football coach and they've worked real hard. And if you can't run the ball the way they play the back end with the coverage, it's hard; you've got to throw a lot of balls in the air. And that balls up in the air a long time so that becomes problematic, so they can stop the run their going to be a tough team.
