KALAMAZOO, Mich.- Western Michigan (22-17-1, 7-10 MAC) pounded out 15 hits and scored in six of its eight at bats, toppling Toledo, 15-7, Saturday at Hyames Field. Zach Gentile homered twice in the win, while Pedro Dager also went deep.
Gentile set the tone for the day, hitting a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first. Back-to-back singles by Chris Lewis and Matthew Abro generated another run and Dager gave WMU a 3-0 lead with a sacrifice fly.
In his next trip to the plate, Dager extended the Broncos' advantage to 5-0, blasting a two-run homer out over the fence in left center in the bottom of the third.
Toledo (15-16, 8-9 MAC) got on the board with a Josh Colliver leadoff home run in the fourth and added an unearned run to pull within 5-2.
The Broncos closed out the game with four strong offensive innings, scoring a run in the fifth, three in the sixth, two in the seventh and four in the eighth. The two runs in the seventh were courtesy of Gentile, as he hit his second home run of the day.
WMU starter Billy Morrison (5-1) had a great showing on the mound, going seven strong innings. He surrendered just three hits, two runs (one earned), while striking out six, picking up his fifth win of the season.
Reliever Tim Mowry closed out the game, giving up five runs (three earned) on two hits in the final two innings.
Dager ended the day 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBIs. Gentile was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored, also drawing three walks. Abro also had a multi-RBI day, driving in three and collecting two hits, including a double.
All eight Bronco batters hit safely on the day. Kevan Hess, Grant Simotes and Joe Sheets all had doubles.
Ryan France (4-5) took the loss for Toledo, giving up five runs on six hits in 3.2 innings. Chris Dudics also homered for the Rockets.
With the series tied 1-1, Western Michigan will look to take the weekend win, facing Toledo tomorrow at Hyames Field at 1 p.m.
