CHILLICOTHE, Ohio- No. 7 Western Michigan's season came to an end with a 5-4 loss to No. 6 Ohio in the Mid-American Conference Tournament Thursday morning at VA Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe, Ohio.
Western Michigan and Ohio (28-29) went back-and-forth through the first five innings, each producing three runs apiece. The Bobcats broke the 3-3 tie in the bottom of the sixth with a leadoff home run by Chris Klimko.
Ohio held onto the lead for good, adding an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh, as Matt Stiffler homered to left center to start off the inning.
Joe Sheets tried to keep things interesting in the bottom of the ninth, opening the inning with his team-leading 10th home run of the season to right center.
Three of Western Michigan's four runs were via home runs, as Zach Gentile took the third pitch of the game over the wall in right field and Kyle Galbraith sent a solo shot into the trees in left field in the third. Chris Lewis drove in the Bronco's third run of the game in the fifth, singling through the right side.
The Broncos were held to six hits in a complete nine-inning effort by Ohio right-hander Chris Rigo. Rigo struck out seven and allowed three walks.
Allowing five runs on nine hits in seven innings, WMU starter Billy Morrison (6-2) was tagged with the loss.
The Broncos finish the year with an overall mark of 29-23-1.
