TOLEDO, Ohio - Western Michigan softball earned a road split at Toledo on Friday afternoon, capturing a 4-2 win after falling, 1-0, in the first game of the doubleheader held at Scott Park. Becky Bartosz and Lexi Jager each homered in the win and Samantha Vargocko was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate in the second game.
The Broncos (14-12, 6-4 MAC) scored all of the runs they needed in the second game of Friday's twinbill in the first three innings. Jager struck a two-out home run, her third of the season, to put WMU up, 1-0, after the first frame.
Bartosz needed just one at bat to collect the eighth home run of her career, taking Toledo's (13-20, 3-9 MAC) second pitcher of the game deep in the top of the second. Vargocko led off the inning with a double to straight away center field for her first of three hits during the game, setting the table for Bartosz.
Western Michigan scratched out one more tally in the top of the third inning to go up, 4-0. Jager drew a lead-off walk to start things off. She advanced to third base when Brittney Reist grounded out to the shortstop and scored one batter later when Vargocko deposited a base hit into center field.
The Rockets scored a pair in the bottom of the fourth inning but starting pitcher Meghan Thomas sat down took control after that for her fourth win of the season. Toledo, which scored its two unearned on an error in left field left the bases loaded to end the fourth, ending the threat. Thomas sat down the next nine batters in order, striking out one, getting a pair of fly outs and forcing six ground outs.
Toledo took a no-hitter into the sixth inning in its one-run victory in the first game of the doubleheader. Only Mandi Sayres managed a hit during the loss as WMU had just four batters reach base and only Sayres advanced to second when Jager was intentionally walked in the top of the sixth. Sayres also recorded a hit in the second game to extend her team-leading hit streak to nine games.
Western Michigan travels a short distance to Bowling Green, Ohio, for a two-game set against the Falcons on Saturday and Sunday. The game on Saturday has been moved up to a 1 p.m., start in order to stay ahead of incoming weather. BGSU also earned a split in its Friday doubleheader, taking the first game, 5-1, over Northern Illinois but dropping the night cap, 3-2, to the Huskies.
