The Western Michigan (12-18, 9-7) women's basketball team dropped a
tight contest Wednesday night to Toledo (12-15, 5-10), 77-68, on senior
night at University Arena. WMU seniors Amanda Parker and Chandra Smith
were each honored before the game with plaques and flowers, but would
walk out of University Arena for the last time on a sour note.
WMU
finishes third place in the MAC West behind only Eastern Michigan and
Ball State, who will share the first place title. In the MAC
tournament, Ball State will be seeded No. 1 in the West, with EMU and
WMU seeded No. 2 and No. 3, respectively.
Tiera DeLaHoussaye, Sara Vest, and Brenna Banktson
accounted for 50 of the Bronco's 68 points in the loss. DeLaHoussaye
led the charge with 20 points and nine assists, Vest came off the bench
to record a double-double with a career high 19 points and 11 rebounds,
and Banktson chipped in 11 points.
The Broncos got off to a hot
start in the first half, and jumped out to an early 12-point lead. The
Rockets chipped away at the lead and cut it to three, 34-31, at the
half.
Missing from the Bronco's lineup for most of the game was freshman forward Ebony Cleary,
who took a blow to the head early in the first half and felt concussion
like symptoms. Cleary's near nine points per game were missed by the
Broncos, who could have used her body in the paint.
Toledo took its first lead of the game, 48-47, with 12:25 left in the second half when Lisa Johnson sank a pair of free throws.
Western
Michigan regained the lead and held it for the next eight minutes,
before Toledo's Olivia Terry hit a three pointer with 4:44 left in the
game that started an 8-0 run by the Rockets, making it 70-63 with 2:30
remaining.
With 1:43 left on the clock, Molly Dwyer
hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to four points, 70-66, but that was
as close as the Broncos would get. Toledo finished the game on a 7-2
run to close out the victory.
After going 4-1 the first time
around against MAC West opponents, WMU trailed off and finished the
season going 1-4 the second time through the division.
The Broncos will play the MAC East's No. 6 seed, Akron, Sunday night at 9 pm at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio.
