BRADENTON, Fla.- Western Michigan defeated Villanova 3-1 in the morning game and lost 5-0 to Northeastern in the afternoon in Bradenton, Fla., Wednesday. The Broncos' record stands at 7-3 on the season, as the Brown & Gold have gone gone 5-2 during its spring trip to the Sunshine State.
Villanova out-hit Western Michigan 8-5 and took a one-run lead in the top of the fifth, but the Broncos stormed back with three runs in the sixth on their way to victory.
Grant Simotes and Zach Gentile reached on a walk and a single. Lewis singled to score Simotes and Matthew Abro follwed suit, driving in Gentile. Chris Lewis plated the third run of the inning, scoring Pedro Dager, who had replaced Lewis in the basepath.
WMU starter Ross Westdorp (2-0) picked up the win, scattering six hits and striking out four without allowing a walk in seven innings of work. The bullpen combo of Tim Mowry and Derek Mosher closed out the win. Mosher was credited with his second save of the season.
Lewis recorded two of the Brown & Gold's five hits.
The Broncos were blanked in the nightcap, as Northeastern out-hit Western Michigan, 13-6. Dager had the only multi-hit game for WMU, going 2-for-3.
Sheldon McDonald (2-0) threw eight shutout innings of five-hit, nine-strikeout ball and did not walk a batter, leading the Huskies to the win.
Bronco starter Michael Klepper (1-1) took the loss for Western Michigan. He gave up the first two runs on eight hits, lasting 5.1 innings. Brian Schutzbach finished the game, allowing two runs in the seventh and one in the ninth.
